East & West Join Forces to Take Down Stress at NJ Natural Family Health

Stress

Practitioners of traditional Chinese medicine have a unique approach to stress that is often not found in other forms of medicine. To fully treat the underlying causes of a flawed stress response, it is best to conduct a comprehensive evaluation, then explore how stress has affected quality of life from both a physical and emotional perspective.  Once this is determined, we can formulate a treatment plan that often includes a combination of acupuncture, prescription herbal formulas, and other modalities that will address not only the stress response, but the on-going symptoms that are directly related.

Physical Stress Symptoms

Rapid breathing, accelerated heartbeat and upset stomach are all common occurrences in stressful situations. If they only appear occasionally and give the body time to recover, the effects are fleeting and temporary. Unresolved stress reaction can lead to hormonal imbalance and an immune system that becomes weakened and unable to respond appropriately. While the body is dealing with on-going stress, a whole host of ailments and diseases begin to plague a person.

Stress Is the Root Cause

When patients present with chronic stress, it is often difficult for physicians to provide a link between physical symptoms, resulting in patients being referred to specialist after specialist in an attempt to find a root cause. As a trauma nurse at The Johns Hopkins hospital, I have had the benefit of working with a variety of specialists. However, my own independent research led me to believe that optimal wellness can be achieved through a combination of Western and Eastern studies. From an Eastern perspective, I began to examine the root cause of a variety of health issues. Time and time again, I have found chronic stress to be an underlying issue that can both cause health issues, and exacerbate those that are already present.

Stress Blocks Proper Treatment

Sometimes, stress is the root cause of certain physical symptoms. If not the cause itself, stress can be an obstacle that stands in the way of other physical symptoms being properly treated. All of this stands to support my reasoning for including stress-relieving acupuncture points into every treatment given for a physical complaint. Ideally, we will allow the body’s own natural self-repair mechanisms and chemicals do their jobs. You will leave each session with specific techniques that should allow you to regulate the effects of stress while enduring them in your daily life.

Stress Won't Beat Our Integrated Approach

Though I began my career as a nurse, my higher education led to a doctorate in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. By the time I took a position coordinating the Integrative Oncology Acupuncture department at Mount Sinai Beth Israel's prestigious Comprehensive Cancer Center, I had developed a deep understanding of chronic stress and the negative influence it can have on the body’s ability to heal. Eventually, I set up my own private practice in New Jersey so that I could offer patients a truly integrated approach to health and wellness. At NJ Natural Family Health, stress is one of the many health issues that are resolved quite efficiently through a combination of Chinese Medicine modalities.
